DeForrest Brown, Jr. is a New York-based rhythmanalyst, media theorist, and curator whose work explores the intersections of technology, thought, and speculative futures within performative contexts. He is known for his digital audio and extended media praxis under the moniker Speaker Music, where he utilizes tools like iPads and Ableton to transform sound and gesture into sonic paintings and live abstractions. Brown is also one half of the duo Elevator to Mezzanine (E-M) with artist and musician Steven Warwick. His recent collaboration with sound artist Kepla resulted in the provocative mixtape The Wages of Black is Death (PTP), which sets the stage for their ongoing research and performance praxis, Substantia Nigra.
