Muhannad Shono (b. 1977, Riyadh) is a Saudi artist whose cross-disciplinary practice spans drawing, sculpture, installation, and large-scale immersive environments. Drawing from mythology, spiritual texts, and personal narratives, Shono’s work is rooted in the power of the line—both as a visual gesture and a conceptual device. Exploring themes of displacement, memory, and non-belonging, his monochromatic language opens up voids and thresholds, often blurring the boundaries between presence and absence, structure and collapse. A trained architect, his visual language oscillates between precision and erasure, always led by the impulse to tell stories. Shono represented Saudi Arabia at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) with The Teaching Tree, and has presented works at the Lyon Biennale, Islamic Arts Biennale, Desert X AlUla, Noor Riyadh, and the Sea Art Festival, Busan. His work is part of major institutional collections including the British Museum, Centre Pompidou, Ithra, and Art Jameel. He is the recipient of the Saudi National Cultural Award for Visual Arts (2021–2022) and is currently based in Riyadh. He is represented by Athr Gallery.
