The Basílica de la Sagrada Família is a monumental Roman Catholic church in Barcelona and one of the most iconic works of visionary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. A synthesis of Gothic and Art Nouveau forms, the basilica has become a symbol of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in 1882, and Gaudí took over the project in 1883, transforming it with his singular organic and spiritual vision. He devoted the last years of his life entirely to the basilica, which remains under construction to this day. Known for its intricate façades, vertiginous towers, and symbolism rooted in Christian theology, the Sagrada Família exemplifies Gaudí’s belief in architecture as an expression of divine order and nature’s geometry. Today, the Sagrada Família Foundation continues the work based on Gaudí’s original plans, blending artisanal techniques with advanced digital modeling. The basilica remains open to worship, while also serving as a major cultural, historical, and artistic landmark that draws millions of visitors annually.
