Ana Mendieta

Ana Mendieta (1946–1985) was a Cuban-born interdisciplinary artist, primarily known for her pioneering earth/body works. Referring to herself as a sculptor, Mendieta created art that sought to reestablish her connection with the universe. Her most iconic body of work, the Silueta Series, employed her own body, and later its absence, in landscapes as a way of exploring themes of nature, spirituality, and identity. Over a period of 15 years, Mendieta produced groundbreaking work across various mediums, including sculpture, photography, film, drawing, and site-specific installations, often utilizing organic materials such as earth, water, and fire. Her work continues to resonate globally, with more than 120 pieces held in public collections worldwide. Mendieta’s legacy has been honored with 56 monographic exhibitions, including 16 major museum retrospectives, further solidifying her influence on contemporary art. Her contributions continue to inspire new generations of artists, and her works remain central to conversations about body politics, gender, and the relationship between humans and nature. Mendieta was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1946 and tragically passed away in New York City in 1985.
